Plan your Europe routeiPhone departure checklist
Prepare the iPhone and the plan separately. The exact device, software and provider instructions determine which steps apply and when the clock starts.

Installing a profile, starting validity and getting online are different observations.
You can prepare before departure. Whether you should install now depends on the exact product’s written timing rule. First separate the profile on your phone, the event that starts validity, and a working mobile-data connection. Do not mark them complete together.
Use this checklist with a plan you already have or one you are considering. It does not tell your phone to install anything. If the start rule is unclear, keep the timing unresolved and ask the provider before taking a step that could begin the allowance.
Apple lists model and regional differences for eSIM support. An iPhone used with a different carrier must also be unlocked. A familiar model name alone is not enough: check the regional version, lock status and the provider’s device requirements. Source
Record only the non-sensitive details below. Keep the exact plan name beside its instructions so you do not apply a subscription rule to a different data package. An empty field means Not confirmed; it never means compatible.
Do not paste a phone number, IMEI, EID, QR code, activation code, password or account identifier into this page. If the provider needs private details, use its own authenticated support channel.

Look for the exact product’s validity or activation policy. Record the start event, any deadline, the expiry calculation and renewal terms. The options below are questions to resolve, not claims that a named provider uses each rule.
If purchase starts the clock, include the days before departure in your calculation. If installation starts it, early setup may consume validity. If a supported-network connection starts it, check whether your departure country is covered. For any other rule, copy its meaning into your own notes and keep the source link.
A duration alone does not explain the trigger or the expiry time. If a provider leaves the time zone, activation deadline or renewal unclear, request that detail. Do not substitute a brand-wide blog post for the terms of your selected product.
Not confirmed. Check the exact plan rule before proceeding.
Check an item only when you have completed that preparation step. Six checked items are a record of your preparation, not proof that a profile is installed, a plan has started or coverage will work.
Apple documents several setup methods, depending on carrier support, including a QR code, carrier app or link. A Wi-Fi connection or hotspot is generally required, with stated exceptions for some eSIM-only models and regions. Use the method supplied for your own plan. Source
Keep the instructions available before you lose your existing connection. Treat an activation QR code as private: save it securely for your own use, not in a public checklist. Set aside time to read each prompt instead of rushing at the departure gate.

Use the exact provider instructions to enable the travel line and any required roaming setting. Do not copy the home line’s roaming choice onto the travel line without checking. Data roaming and plan validity are separate decisions.
Apple lets you label plans and choose the cellular-data line. Its Dual SIM documentation also describes automatic data switching and call-related effects. Review those choices alongside your carrier’s terms, particularly if you need to receive calls or messages on the home number. Source
Keeping the home line active can still incur roaming charges. Selecting the travel line for data does not settle every charge on the home line. Check voice, text and other applicable carrier charges before relying on both lines. Source
For a useful connection check, deliberately use the intended mobile-data line and make a fresh, small internet request. A page loaded over hotel Wi-Fi does not demonstrate eSIM data access. Record the outcome as your observation; do not infer destination-wide coverage from one successful request.
Review which line is active after returning. Apple describes automatic travel-line changes in some circumstances, but also tells users to check their primary line when that notification does not appear. Do not assume the phone restored every preference you changed. Source
Review the travel product’s renewal and cancellation rules with the provider. Keep any instructions needed for reuse. Remove or retain the profile only when you understand what that means for this product.
Apple advises against deleting an eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless the carrier directs it. A replacement may require the carrier. Deleting the profile is also not a substitute for contacting the carrier to cancel a plan. Source

Stop at the first point where the instructions stop matching your phone. Record the model variant, software version, exact plan and a non-sensitive description of the error. Keep this record separate from private account credentials.
Apple’s setup support page provides staged troubleshooting and directs unresolved cases to the carrier. Follow the current instructions that match your device; do not repeatedly delete and reinstall a profile. Contact the provider if the plan rule or purchased allowance is the uncertain part. Source
A failed setup does not establish that you need a second eSIM. First distinguish a device issue, an installation issue, a validity rule and a data-connection failure. Use hotel Wi-Fi or another available connection to reach the right support channel.
