Travel VPN

Choose a VPN for the job you actually need.

Mobile data gets you connected. HTTPS and a VPN serve different purposes. Start with your existing tools, device and travel situation.

What are you trying to do?

Hotel login is failing

Get through the supported portal first.

A VPN is not a replacement for the hotel’s login procedure. Confirm the network, complete the portal and follow your device or workplace instructions before changing VPN settings.

Personal browsing on shared Wi-Fi

Keep the basic protections in place.

The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is widespread. Check HTTPS, use current software and protect accounts. An encrypted scam site can still steal information.

Work travel or an existing VPN

Check what you already have.

Use your employer’s required access tools for work. If you already subscribe to a VPN, check device support, connection limits and settings before adding another subscription.

What a VPN adds — and what still needs a check

Different tools, separate decisions.

An eSIM provides a mobile data connection. HTTPS encrypts traffic to a supporting website or service. A VPN carries traffic through its service in an encrypted tunnel.

A kill switch can block traffic when the VPN drops, but behavior depends on the exact app and operating system. A browser proxy extension should not be treated as protecting every app.

No recorded local network tests establish a best provider for Egypt, Turkey, the USA or any destination. These facts do not promise availability, anonymity, site trustworthiness or a speed improvement.

NordVPN

10 simultaneous connections

Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS.

Kill switch: Windows offers internet and selected-app switches. iOS and App Store macOS have an automatic system-wide switch. Other macOS version closes selected apps. Android 8+ has system-wide behavior; Fire TV Stick lacks this feature. Linux blocks after connection loss or manual disconnect when enabled.

App kill switch off by default on Windows; check exact installed app variant.

Subscription cost: Full initial charge, paid term and renewal amount/period not established.

Next check: Identify your exact app variant and required devices; compare its settings with the official instructions before paying.

ProtonVPN

1 device on Free; up to 10 simultaneous connections on paid plans

Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS/iPadOS.

Kill switch: Available on free and paid plans. Standard mode blocks accidental drops, not deliberate disconnects. Advanced mode: Windows, Linux GUI, and iOS/iPadOS beta. Android uses OS settings. Apple-service DNS can bypass on macOS/iOS; macOS server changes may briefly expose the real IP. Most platforms cannot combine split tunneling and kill switch; Windows can.

Check the listed operating-system limitations and exact installed app before relying on this setting.

Subscription cost: Full initial charge, paid term and renewal amount/period not established.

Next check: Identify your exact app variant and required devices; compare its settings with the official instructions before paying.

Prepare the app before the connection problem

  1. Identify the platform. Record your operating system and installed app variant. A macOS App Store build can differ from another build.
  2. Use official instructions. Check available settings for that exact version. Avoid assuming another platform’s toggle exists.
  3. Understand disconnections. Standard or soft kill-switch modes may differ from advanced or strict modes when you disconnect intentionally.
  4. Keep login practical. A portal and a VPN can interact. On managed devices, follow workplace policy; do not disable mandated protection to follow a generic checklist.
  5. Reconnect and check again. Follow the app’s documented status and reconnect behavior after sleep or a network change. A self-reported check does not prove leak resistance.
  6. Retain account protections. HTTPS, updates, strong passwords and two-factor authentication still matter.
